Minutes for Latin Club Board Meeting 11/14
Meeting called to order by Consul Jennifer Friedmann, seconded by Praetrix Alexandra Rojek.
All in attendance barring Quaestrix Mary Mussman
Website
- Alexandra assures board that the website is under control and any issues are not worth mentioning
Fundraising
- We need people to man our tables – 2-5 per lunch period, depending on what we sell
- List is constructed of various board members’ lunch times, with two people each for 2A and 7A and three people each for 3A and 6A (Mary not included) – we can also ask Latin Club for volunteers outside of the board
- Alexandra will buy candy, trying to maximum cost margin – presumably she can take her money back from our profits afterward, but we may or may not need to record total profits
- Some discussion over whether or not to include ice cream in our sales – Pros: attracts attention and brings in more money, pretty cheap – Cons: might need more volunteers, messier, needs cooling method (ask cafeteria staff about freezers that we could borrow)
Amendments
Jacob Gruber presents changes and suggestions for constitutional amendments and bylaws:
- Aediles shall manage service activities – voted and approved
- Quaestor(s) (Pecuniarum?) shall procure grant monies – voted and approved
- Censor shall maintain library – voted and approved
- Tribune – language changed from “freshman” to “Latin 1 student” – voted and approved
- Election rules changed to include fewer conjunctions, more periods and capital letters – voted and approved
- Ties – in case of ties that affect the outcomes of an election, we have now decided that the newly instated Latin Board members shall vote to decide the outcome (instead of having the entire Latin Club vote) - voted and approved
- Discussion over whether or not Board must appoint a webmaster, either in or out of the Board (i.e. the webmaster could already be a board member, but could be a Latin Club member not on the Board) – voted and approved
- Duties of webmaster/ technology coordinator – must post relevant information, figure out mailing list issues, etc. – not yet voted, still withstanding (Jacob not yet ready with finalized language for this bylaw)
Library
Censora Claire Kilpatrick shares her plans for our library:
- We hope to soon have an online library to look up information and books we might need, including brief summaries (from Amazon), in the form of a catalog/database
- Claire plans to better organize the library by using the first letter of the subject category, then the first letters of the title/author – generally agreed that this sounds awesome
Service
Aedile Heta Panchal opens discussion on service projects
- Toga Treating brought in a total of $150.81 over two days, which is good; however, turn-out was less good – in the future we want to increase publicity further ahead of time, which will in turn increase turn-out (hopefully)
- Caroling – first off, we should learn from Toga Treating and publicize this as much as possible; there are two senior homes in consideration, but we will only do one (probably) – one is for the blind and one is not; also, we shall call them ahead of time and schedule a time (before break, preferably after colloquium one week?) at one of the homes – we should probably rehearse once before then
- Ornaments? We could make ornaments and sell them along with our candy and/or ice cream,, but they might not sell – unless we made them out of candy?! (Clay or other artsy materials more likely)
- Heta suggests we find some sort of “random giant service project” to do with Latin Club
IJCL
Consul Aisha Ahmad opens discussion on IJCL
- Some kind of election – for representing our school? – open to all Latin Club members to run
- Bazaar – IJCL will have a bazaar selling t-shirts, glasses, playing cards?... ask Latin Club or check out Irish dance competition (Claire) for more ideas
- Forms and modern myths will be due before winter break, date unsure
- Something about button-down shirts (Jacob maintains he has none that would work) and sweaters – I may have missed something here but it seems like we’re trying to frame and/or impersonate Mr. Tylinski? What an interesting meeting…
Consul Jennifer Friedmann talks about t-shirt design contest
- T-shirts must be ordered a month ahead of time, so that limits our time constraint
- Must decide on a prize – cash/gift card ($22? $25? $55 maybe?), or something else
- Some kind of theme for our shirt designs? (Other than Latin that is…)
- Brief discussion on a possible slang definition of the word “digs” to mean one’s clothing or appearance – general feeling is that Jennifer probably made it up, but she claims it is legit (Sorry, Jennifer, but that’s what happened, is it not?)
Aisha moves to adjourn the meeting, seconded by practically everyone.
Next meeting: specific days, themes, and activities at IJCL!
